Online MBA graduate from Benedictine University

Meet Joann Lewis-Massey, a Legal Supervisor and a 2008 online Graduate from Benedictine University’s MBA program.

This video commentary filmed during her graduation ceremony in August ’08, attempts to portray some of the positive benefits Lewis-Massey ascribes to her experience with the online program from Benedictine.

Here below I’ve summarized her response to the four questions posed to her in the video, and contrasted whether or not the same benefits could be attained as well from a bricks & mortar school as from an online school.

– what was the advantage of taking an online course? Having a flexible schedule plus ability to make free time No one standing over your shoulder Not having to go to a classroom to attend to class – how does your online education impact your current job? Promoted after six months due to pursuing degree Able to apply education practically in the real world Resulted in a positive contribution to employer – what does this graduation mean to you? Sacrificing time away from family Hard work and effort paid off Degree on par with standard college degree (”fist class”) – what does having an MBA degree from Benedictine University mean to you? Achievment/satisfaction in accomplishement Official recognition for having the degree Getting to ‘walk’ during graduation

Of the benefits iterated by Joann, it is only that of the flexibility afforded by online school that cannot be rivaled by the traditional on-campus education.  Were we to reverse the matrix I am certain we would find areas of online school that are weaker in comparison, possibly the most notable being social interaction.

Differing goals will be defined by individual needs, but for many, especially those holding down steady jobs or raising children, flexibility often trumps the preference to presence in academia.
